Abstract: The field of foreign/second language education has long been concerned with the instruction of heritage language (HL) learners. However, experts have had difficulty defining the characteristics of HL learners and uncovering their linguistic systems due to the complex sociocultural realities in which they have been exposed to the HL and have participated in their minoritized communities. This talk examines the different ways in which HL learners have been characterized in the field and highlights the increasing diversity among the profiles of HL learners.
