Japanese Language Program Placement
A score of 5 on the Japanese Advanced Placement exam, or a score of 780-800 on the SAT II Subject Test in Japanese, satisfies the Columbia College and the School of General Studies foreign language requirement. Students without AP or SAT II scores, as well as those who wish to continue their study of Japanese at Columbia, must take the department’s placement exam during Orientation.
Placement Test for Fall 2020 (registration required)
Date: Thursday, August, 27th, 2020
Time: 10:00 a.m. -12:30 p.m.*
Registration period: 9:00 am (EST) on April 20th, 2020 – 5:00 pm (EST) on August 25th, 2020
Placement Results: Placement test results will be posted on the wall outside 516 Kent Hall by 7:00 p.m. on the day of the exam.
You must come to check the results in-person. We never send them by email. Results are only valid for courses offered during the Fall 2020 semester.

*Students who wish to take Fifth Year Japanese I or II must take the placement exam.
If you are taking the test for Exemption-PhD (5 year requirement), you should contact Dr. Naofumi Tatsumi (firstname.lastname@example.org) after registration. Your test schedule and format are different.
