Tibetan Language Program
The Tibetan Language Program was established in 2003 after a generous grant from the Luce Foundation endowed a new chair in Modern Tibetan Studies. In an effort to further develop this promising language program, Columbia has recently used its own capital to fully-fund the Tibetan language program, so the Department is now one of very few East Asian departments in the country to include Tibetan studies. The program continues to gain momentum as it garners the interest of more students yearly. Given that Tibetan is a language that is so rich in culture, students will have a unique opportunity to delve into texts that date as far back as the 12th century and to gain proficiency in a language that is spoken by over six million people worldwide.
