Teachers’ Lounge: Cognitive Overload for Instructors Teaching Online (For Graduate Students)

Teachers’ Lounges are a series of informal discussions for graduate students about teaching practices and the culture of learning at Columbia. Since many classes have shifted online this semester, Teachers’ Lounges are linking theories and models of online instruction to insights derived from working in digital learning spaces with Columbia students.

In this session, we will consider the often competing demands on attention faced by instructors in the online environment and their impact on instructional efficacy and authority.

What are some common distractions and areas of overload that hamper desired instructional attention? What can instructors do to incorporate new technologies and pedagogical approaches, while at the same time minimizing the cognitive load associated with each? Join us to share tactics and gain inspiration. Register here.

Reading Group: Anti-Racist Pedagogy Theory and Practice

Have you enacted anti-racist practices in your teaching? Are you looking for resources and support for engaging in anti-racist pedagogical theory and practice? Join the CTL and peer instructors committed to learning more about and incorporating anti-racist pedagogy and practice. Each month, participants will engage in a discussion around a shared text, as well as use the time and space to reflect on their own practice and classrooms.

Please feel welcome to participate in as many gathering dates as your schedule allows. Dates include: October 21, November 18, December 9

By the end of each session, participants should be able to:
-Reflect on their teaching practices
-Translate the community dialogue and shared texts into action
-Enact anti-racist pedagogical practices in their classrooms

Teaching Online with CourseWorks

Register here.

Online teaching presents its own opportunities and challenges. Join us in exploring how to create community, support student engagement, and assess student learning in the online context using CourseWorks, Columbia’s learning management system. This workshop will give you an overview of the CourseWorks interface and highlight a toolset that will allow you to set up a course with clear expectations for students, create opportunities for a variety of assignment engagements, and nurture an environment that encourages a culture of inclusive communication.

Please note that this session takes place via Zoom and is not a Zoom training session. Before you attend this session, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with Zoom. You can access CUIT’s zoom training sessions on their Zoom training page [https://cuit.columbia.edu/zoom#/text-13566]

By the end of the session, participants should be able to:
Determine which CourseWorks tools will meet the teaching and learning goals of their course(s).
Intentionally integrate CourseWorks into their courses.
