Event synopsis:

This event features an important recent publication on the theories and practices of Peking opera, written by Guo Baochang and Tao Qingmei. Guo is a leading director whose creative career has spanned four decades and whose work has innovatively engaged with multiple media (opera, spoken drama, film and television). A life-long lover and practitioner of Peking Opera, Guo in this book explores Peking opera as history, philosophy, practice and experience, offering new paradigms to understand Peking opera as both rooted in broader Chinese aesthetic traditions, and as embodied and reflexive practices by practitioners who work daily on the theater stage. Tao is a prolific scholar of Chinese drama in modern and contemporary times, whose intellectual work on drama is productively complemented by her long-standing engagement as a critic and educator in China’s flourishing contemporary theater scene. Besides the two authors, we bring together an outstanding group of scholars working on pre-modern and modern Chinese literature and theater, and on broader media cultures including film, performance art and new media. The panel will begin with a conversation between the renowned author and critic Li Tuo with Guo and Tao, and proceed with comments and reflections from Gu Shuguang (Renmin), Judith Zeitlin (Chicago), Weihong Bao (Berkeley), Shang Wei (Columbia) and all other participants. This event will be conducted in Chinese only.
