SUMMARY:An Introduction to CKS Library Resources and Study/Research Programs
DESCRIPTION:March 22\, 2023 \n6:00 PM – 7:00 PM \n918 International Affairs Building \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers: \nSamedy Suong\, Deputy Director\, Center for Khmer Studies\nSivleng Chhor\, Head Librarian\, Center for Khmer Studies \nModerator:\nEve Zucker\, CKS President and WEAI Adjunct Research Scholar \nLocated in Cambodia\, the Center for Khmer Studies (CKS) promotes research\, teaching and public service in the social sciences\, arts and humanities in Cambodia and the Mekong region. CKS fosters research and international scholarly exchange by programs that increase understanding of Cambodia and its region\, strengthen Cambodia’s cultural and educational structures and integrate Cambodian scholars in regional and international exchange\, and promote a vigorous civil society. These programs include the Senior Fellowships\, Scholar in Residence Fellowships\, Dissertation Research Fellowships\, Junior Residence Fellowships\, and the Khmer Language and Culture Program. \nIn addition\, following decades of civil war and the targeted destruction of its educational resources\, Cambodia faced a crisis in the preservation of its literary heritage. In this context\, where access to books was almost non-existent and public libraries were only available to the average Cambodian in Phnom Penh\, CKS began to build a library collection specializing in Cambodian and Southeast Asian history and culture. Since opening in 2001\, the CKS Library collection has grown from a few hundred to over 19\,000 titles\, many are now available online. \nRefreshments will be provided. \nThis event is sponsored by the Weatherhead East Asian Institute and co-sponsored by the New York Southeast Asia Network and the Center for Khmer Studies. \nRegistration:  \n\nTo register to attend this event in-person\, please register HERE. *Please note that non-CUID holders need to show proof of their primary series and one booster dose of COVID-19 vaccines.\nTo register to attend this event online\, please register HERE.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nContact Information: \nSreyneath Poole\nsp3743@columbia.edu\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
