SUMMARY:Beyond Search: New Digital Humanities Tools for Studying East Asian Literatures
DESCRIPTION:Hoyt Long\, University of Chicago \nTime: Friday\, Feb. 16th\, 9:30-12:00PM \nLocation: Kent 403 \nThis two-hour\, hands-on workshop is for graduate students interested in learning more about how digital methods can augment their research on East Asian texts. Overall\, attendees will gain an understanding of available databases and tools\, as well as a better appreciation of more sophisticated computational techniques such as text mining and natural language processing. While the session’s primary focus will be on analyzing the Aozora database of modern Japanese literature using the advanced interface developed at the Chicago Text Lab\, recent developments in Chinese literary corpora will also be surveyed. An extended Q&A session will give students an opportunity to get specialist input about how digital humanities tools might be used in their specific areas of research. This workshop is open to all graduate students\, and no specific technical background is required. \n  \n
