SUMMARY:CTLgrads Journal Club (for Graduate Students)
DESCRIPTION:\nAre you interested in the research on teaching and learning and how to apply this research to your teaching practice? Join us for our CTLgrads Journal Club where we will introduce you to the research on teaching in various disciplines (also known as Discipline-Based Education Research\, or DBER) and engage peer-reviewed articles through our group discussions and contributions to the journal club. Each session will also focus on how we can use education research–in our field and beyond–to inform our own teaching practices. \nThe CTLgrads Journal Club will be a HyFlex event\, you may choose to attend either in person or online via Zoom. Journal Club will start on Wednesday 10/6 from 2:40-3:55p and will meet every other Wednesday until the beginning of December (10/20\, 11/3\, 11/17\, 12/1). \nPrior to this session\, please read:  \n\nNeumann\, R. (2001). Disciplinary differences and university teaching. Studies in Higher Education\, 26(2). This will be our deep dive into discipline specific pedagogical practices and concerns as the impetus for community formation.\nMader\, S. B.\, & Gibson\, C. (2019). Learning in partnership. This short overview of the book from the National Institute for Learning Outcomes and Assessment will provide us with some potential areas to explore this year.\n\nFirst time attending the CTLgrads Journal Club? We highly recommend you read this short\, 2-page essay by Lee Shulman “Teaching as Community Property” (1993) for insight into the goals of the series. \nOther Notes: \n\nRegistered participants will be sent a meeting ID and passcode to join this session via Zoom. Same-day registrations must be handled by emailing CTLgrads@columbia.edu.\nSign up for our mailing list to learn about the upcoming readings: https://bit.ly/CTLgradsJC-Signup\nReadings will be listed here and distributed to our mailing list one week prior to the session.\nParticipants are expected to have read the papers in order to contribute to and learn from the journal club’s discussions.\nIf you haven’t received the readings\, please contact CTLgrads@columbia.edu.\n\nSessions are co-facilitated by Chris Chen and Ian Althouse\, Center for Teaching and Learning\, and attendance is open to current graduate students and postdocs. \nColumbia University makes every effort to accommodate individuals with disabilities.
