Historian Matthew R. Augustine will discuss his recently published book, From Japanese Empire to American Hegemony: Koreans and Okinawans in the Resettlement of Northeast Asia (a title in the WEAI “Studies” series), a comprehensive study of the dynamic and often contentious relationship between migration and border controls in U.S.-occupied Japan, Korea, and the Ryukyu Islands in the wake of WWII. Augustine’s book examines the American interlude as a closely integrated, transregional history.
Speaker’s Bio: Matthew R. Augustine is Associate Professor of Modern Japanese and East Asian History at Kyushu University. He has written articles in English and Japanese on the history of military occupations and decolonization in East Asia after WWII. His latest book, From Japanese Empire to American Hegemony: Koreans and Okinawans in the Resettlement of Northeast Asia (University of Hawai’i, 2023), was nominated as a finalist for the 2025 Modern Japan History Association Book Prize.
