SUMMARY:Holding the Fort? Japan and Liberal Economic Order in the Indo-Pacific
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Saori Katada\, Professor of International Relations\, University of Southern California \nModerator: Daniel Smith\, Gerald L. Curtis Visiting Associate Professor of Modern Japanese Politics and Foreign Policy\, Columbia University \nHow can Japan\, a systemically important middle power\, hold the fort of liberal economic order? During the last ten years\, the Japanese government has actively engaged in geoeconomic strategy to strengthen regional institutions and high-standard economic rules in the Indo-Pacific. Now\, this strategy is challenged\, on the one hand\, in the face of disruption imposed by the US Trump administration and the Biden administration’s weak economic commitment in the region. On the other\, Covid-19 and associated disruption of supply chains\, as well as China’s weaponization of economic interdependence have added economic security urgency. \nThis event is sponsored by the Weatherhead East Asian Institute. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nContact Information\nJulie Kwan\njk4371@columbia.edu\n\n REGISTER\n\n
