This workshop rethinks the notion of the “author\,” moving away from an author-centric model to explore notions of collective and collaborative production. What are the implications of a non-author-centric model for understanding theater\, for understanding issues of training\, actor lineage\, and performance? The workshop also addresses the role of publishing and print in the construction of the early-modern and modern author. \nThis workshop follows up on the earlier symposium “Rethinking Authorship in Japan and\nthe World” (March 2017) but with a focus on Japanese theater (Noh and Kabuki) and publishing\nculture. \nPresenters\nRyūichi Kodama (Waseda University)\nHaruo Shirane (Columbia University)\nTomi Suzuki (Columbia University)\nMikio Takemoto (Waseda University)\nMisa Umetada (Waseda University) \nDiscussants\nLewis Cook (Queens College of the City University of New York)\nKazuaki Komine (Rikkyo University Emeritus; Waseda University Senior Scholar)\nSung-si Lee (Waseda University)\nMo Li (Columbia University)\nYuika Kitamura (Kobe University)\nSatoko Shimazaki (University of Southern California)\nShiho Takai (Waseda University)\nHirokazu Toeda (Waseda University) \nOrganizers\nHaruo Shirane (Columbia University)\nTomi Suzuki (Columbia University)\nHirokazu Toeda (Waseda University)\nDirector of the Ryusaku Tsunoda Center of Japanese Culture\nSung-si Lee (Waseda University)\nColumbia University Japanese Literature PhD Students (Assistants)\nStephen Choi\, Yuki Ishida\, Ekaterina Komova\, Rachel Mei\, Maho Miyazaki\, Yiwen Shen\,\nTyler Walker\, Oliver White\, Chi Zhang \nAdministrative Staff\nYoshiko Niiya (Donald Keene Center of Japanese Culture\, Columbia University)\nAnri Vartanov (Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures\, Columbia University)\nTony Lee (Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures\, Columbia University)\nYumi Jōkō (Waseda University) \nSponsors\nDonald Keene Center of Japanese Culture\, Columbia University\nDepartment of East Asian Languages and Cultures\, Columbia University\nRyusaku Tsunoda Center for Japanese Culture\, Waseda University\nGlobal Japanese Studies Model Unit\, Waseda University Top Global University (TGU) Project\,\nsupported by Ministry of Education\, Culture\, Sports\, Science and Technology – Japan \n
