SUMMARY:LC 1: Into the Unknown: Teaching Futures and Uncertainty (for grads)
DESCRIPTION:\nCTLgrads Learning Community – Into the Unknown: Teaching Futures and Uncertainty (Session 1) – for graduate students \nAs teachers\, we can sometimes feel pressure to present the world as certain\, conclusive\, and neatly structured. But global challenges like climate change\, political divisiveness\, and technological disruption remind us that the future is inherently uncertain—and that normative debates about what should be done are unavoidable. This two-part Learning Community explores how we can recognize and harness uncertainty in ways that are productive rather than paralyzing. In the first session\, we will focus on classroom strategies for engaging students with contested values and visions for the future without losing trust or motivation. In the second session\, held at a museum\, we will consider how material artifacts\, exhibits\, and learning spaces beyond the classroom can help us model the challenges of teaching uncertainty across time\, connecting the unknowable future with the contested past. \nThis two-part Learning Community is in-person and will be co-facilitated by Anna Garner and Aandishah Samara\, Senior Lead Teaching Fellows at the Center for Teaching and Learning Community. Participants should register for and attend both sessions of this LC. \n\nSession 1 of this two-part Learning Community will convene Thursday 10/16\, 3:30-5pm in room 212 Butler Library\nSession 2 will convene Thursday 10/23\, 3:30-5pm at the American Museum of Natural History; registration is available here\n\nEach session of this LC counts as a Pedagogy Workshop for the Teaching Development Program (TDP). See the TDP FAQs for more information about obtaining credit for this and other graduate student-led events through the CTL. \n— \nColumbia University makes every effort to accommodate individuals with disabilities.
