SUMMARY:LC2: Bridging the Divide: Interdisciplinary Teaching
DESCRIPTION:\nCTLgrads Learning Community – Bridging the Divide: Interdisciplinary Teaching and Its Pedagogical Effects (Session 2) – for graduate students \nWhat are the effects of “disciplining” knowledge and how might an interdisciplinary approach to developing syllabi enrich pedagogical practice and student learning in the classroom? This two-part LC will consider these questions and the effect of interdisciplinary teaching more broadly. Among the goals of this LC is to consider the benefits of constructing a unified academy and what effect interdisciplinarity has on our students. \nGraduate student instructors at Columbia encounter students of every major and academic background\, particularly in courses taught as part of the core curriculum and language instruction. Therefore\, an interdisciplinary approach to teaching is a valuable method by which to engage students across academic interests. It also supports students’ learning across disciplines\, highlights how knowledge interconnects between academic departments\, and encourages students to pursue their own interdisciplinary approach to learning. This LC is intended for participants from all academic disciplines. \nThis two-part Learning Community is in-person and will be co-facilitated by Marissa Swan and Emma Leidy\, Senior Lead Teaching Fellows at the Center for Teaching and Learning. Participants should register for and attend both sessions of this LC. Registration for Session 2 on Wednesday 10/23\, 2:10pm–3:25pm\, is available here. Each session of this LC counts as a Pedagogy Workshop for the Teaching Development Program (TDP).
