SUMMARY:LC2: Learning Through Non-traditional Modalities
DESCRIPTION:CTLgrads Learning Community – Beyond the Lecture-Essay Model: Learning Through Non-traditional Modalities (Session 2) – for graduate students \nThrough the course of their academic\, professional\, and personal life\, students will be exposed to a range of different modalities through which they learn about the world. Pedagogical research supports learning through a diversity of modalities\, as it engages different learning types and has been proven to be an effective method for active learning. Non-traditional modalities include podcasts\, field trips\, creative writing\, art projects\, and more. In this two part learning community\, we will discuss both the benefits and challenges of incorporating non-traditional modalities in teaching and how to assess non-traditional learning. Moreover\, we will provide educators with the chance to reflect on and plan for the use of non-traditional learning modalities in their own teaching practice. Our aim is to equip educators with a range of tools by which to improve learning outcomes in the classroom for diverse learners. \nThis two-part Learning Community is in-person and will be co-facilitated by Tahlia Pajaczkowska-Russell and Garima Raheja\, Senior Lead Teaching Fellows at the Center for Teaching and Learning. Each session of this LC counts as a Pedagogy Workshop for the Teaching Development Program (TDP).
