Legacy of New York – Chinatown Walking Tour

Join University Life for a walking tour through Chinatown as part of the Legacy of New York series to explore the rich history, cultural traditions, and enduring resilience of the Chinese American community in New York City. This tour offers an opportunity to reflect on cultural continuity, migration, and celebration, while deepening our understanding and appreciation of Chinatown’s role in New York City.
As we walk together, you’ll learn about significant sites including the former Chinese Opera House, Funeral Row, Columbus Park, the Fish Market, and other notable locations that have shaped Chinatown and NYC over generations. Along the way, we’ll examine how Chinese immigrants navigated discriminatory policies like the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, built vibrant and lasting communities in the face of prejudice, and how these histories continue to resonate today.
Whether you’re a native New Yorker or visiting Chinatown for the first time, we’re confident you’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for this vibrant community. We look forward to exploring it together!
The Legacy of New York series invites students to explore the social movements, histories, and communities that have shaped New York City. Through museum visits, walking tours, and site-based learning experiences, this series seeks to highlight and celebrate the most diverse communities, cultures, and events in the nation.
*Students should plan to meet staff at Kent Hall on the Morningside Campus. We will travel downtown together via the MTA subway. Please note we are unable to cover transportation fares.
