SUMMARY:On-line Methods in Language and Language Learning Research
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Professor Leah Roberts\nLeader of Centre for Research in Language Learning and Use (CReLLU)\, University of York \n\n\n\nLanguage researchers use on-line methods to tap into the moment-by-moment analysis of the input that takes place during comprehension and production. Focusing mainly on comprehension and grammatical processing\, knowledge and acquisition\, in this workshop\, I will provide an introduction to the use of such methods (e.g.\, self-paced reading\, lexical decision\, cross-modal priming). The workshop will comprise three sessions. In the first session\, the types of research questions that are addressed by use of time-sensitive techniques by language and language learning researchers will be covered\, and I will relate the findings of some recent research to those gathered by more traditional\, off-line methods (e.g.\, cloze tests\, acceptability judgments). In the second part of the workshop\, on-line data from a set of studies will be examined in detail. In the final session of the workshop\, participants will have the chance to brainstorm ideas for new on-line studies\, and these practical examples of potential on-line studies will be discussed as a group. \n\n\n\n\nEarly bird (Jun. 20 to Aug. 31): $80 Regular (Sept. 1to Sept. 27): $120 Onsite (Sept. 28): $150 \n\n\n\nRegistration link: https://commerce.cashnet.com/TCSOL? itemcode=TCSOL-0013 \n\n\n\nTo request disability-related accommodations\, contact OASID at oasid@tc.edu\, (212) 678-3689\, TTY: (212) 678-3853\, (646) 755-3144 \nContact information: tcsol@tc.columbia.edu 1-212-678-8378 http://www.tc.columbia.edu/tcsol\nWechat (TCSOL_Columbia) | Facebook (Tcsol_CU) 525W. 120th Street\, New York\, NY 10027 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
