SUMMARY:Xi Jinping’s Long-Term Strategic Vision and Its Implication for the American Position in the World
DESCRIPTION:Weatherhead East Asian Institute Event\nPlease join us for a lecture with: \nHao SU\, Professor\, Department of Diplomacy; founding director of the Center for Strategic and Peace Studies\, \nChina Foreign Affairs University. \n  \nModerated by: \nAndrew Nathan\, Class of 1919 Professor of Political Science\, \nColumbia University \n  \nSince the modern times\, the world has undergone three waves of globalization. The first wave started from 500 years ago\, with the European countries connecting the world by means of the opening of new sea-routes\, the great discoveries of geography and the establishment of global colonial system. This is a linear globalization based on power. The second wave started at the end of WWII. The establishment of a series of US-led international institutions linked the world into a systematic international society. This is a flat globalization based on institutions. Nowadays\, the third wave of globalization is under way. The rise of emerging newly-economies from the developing world and the effect of economic globalization have brought about a trend of re-balance for the world economic pattern. This will be a tridimensional globalization based on governance. Facing the advent of this trend\, the Chinese government has proposed the “Belt and Road Initiative”\, in order to propel the network construction of both worldwide partnerships and regional integration\, with the purpose of promoting the realization of global governance. \n  \nAbout the Speaker: \nProfessor SU was awarded his B.A. in history and M.A. in international relations by Beijing Normal University and a Ph.D. in international relations by China Foreign Affairs University. He took advanced study in the School of Oriental and African Studies\, University of London in 1993-1995; and was a Fulbright scholar in the Institute of War and Peace Studies of Columbia University\, and in the Institute of East Asia Studies of the University of California at Berkeley in 2001-2002. He was a visiting professor in the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies at Uppsala University\, Sweden\, in 2004; at Bond University\, Australia\, in 2014; and Department of Politics of LUISS University\, Rome\, in 2015. \nHe was acting chairman of the Department of Diplomacy\, director of China’s Foreign Relations Section\, general secretary of the East Asian Studies Center\, and director of the Center for Asia-Pacific Studies at China Foreign Affairs University. He is the president of the Beijing Geopolitical Strategy and Development Association\, a member of the Chinese Committee for Council of Security Cooperation in the Asia-Pacific and the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council\, a board member of the China Association of Arms Control and Disarmament\, the Pacific Society of China\, the China Association of Asian-African Development Exchange\, and the China Association of China-ASEAN. His specialties are China’s foreign and security policy\, strategic studies\, international relations in the Asia-Pacific region\, and East Asian integration. \n  \nThis is a Weatherhead East Asian Institute Lectures and Panels event. \n  \nNo registration Required \n
