SUMMARY:Parenting Needs of Chinese Parents of Children with Autism
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a lecture: \nParenting Needs of Chinese Parents of Children with Autism from America\, Macau\, and Taiwan \nHsu-Min Chiang\, Assistant Professor of Education\, University of Macau \nModerated by: Qin Gao\, Professor of Social Policy and Social Work; Director\, China Center for Social Policy \nMany studies have focused on parenting stress in parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and high parenting stress in these parents is commonly reported. But limited studies have focused on parenting needs in parents of children with ASD\, especially Chinese parents. Different parenting styles can be found in different cultures and different cultures may result in different parenting needs. In this lecture\, Dr. Hsu-Min Chiang will present her study focusing on the needs of parents of children with ASD in the United States\, Macau\, and Taiwan in support services to help them reduce parenting stress and improve their children’s functioning. The audience will learn about these parents’ needs and the differences between Chinese American parents and non-American Chinese parents in support services. She will also share her clinical experiences and some practical strategies when providing support to Chinese parents across different countries. \nRegister here. Online via Zoom. \nCosponsored by the Wetherhead East Asian Institute\, the Columbia China Center for Social Policy\, and the Columbia School of Social Work \n

SUMMARY:Undergrad Virtual Social Hour
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Thursday\, March 17th from 8:00 – 10:00PM (EDT) for our Virtual Social Hour!  \nThis will be a virtual welcome party for all recently declared EALAC majors and concentrators. We hope that all of the junior and senior EALAC majors and concentrators will join us in welcoming the new students to the department. \nWe will be using a platform called Gather.Town (click here to learn more)\, in which you will be able to virtually mingle with other EALAC students. After choosing an avatar\, you can walk around the virtual department space to find other students. When you approach others\, a Zoom video will pop up for each person\, so that you can video chat with one or more students at the same time. During the social hour\, there will also be team and 1v1 games (located in different areas across the virtual space) that you can play together. \nNo software download is required. However\, you will need a computer to access the website. \nEALAC Undergrad Gather.Town Space*: https://gather.town/app/S9JGCaV9ahf8mGZ6/EALACundergrads \n*Password will be removed on the day of the event so that all students can enter the room freely. \n
