Professor Dorothy Ko Elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences

We are delighted to announce that Dorothy Ko, Professor of Chinese History and Chair of the Department of History at Barnard College, for her election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.


Founded in 1780, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences is one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious honorary societies. It recognizes excellence in multiple areas, including leadership, academia, arts, and research. In addition to being an honorary society, the Academy is a research institute that advances the common good by addressing issues of critical importance to the nation and the world. Please join us in congratulating Professor Ko on this honor!

Professor David Lurie has been awarded the 2022 Mark Van Doren Award!

Please join us in congratulating Professor David Lurie for winning the the 2022 Mark Van Doren Award for Teaching. The Mark Van Doren Award was established in 1962 “in recognition of a faculty member’s humanity, devotion to truth and inspiring leadership.” Please read the full article on Professor Lurie’s accomplishment on the Columbia College website.

Professor Haruo Shirane has been elected an Honorary Member of the Japan Academy (Nippon gakushi-in)

We are delighted to announce that Professor Haruo Shirane, Shincho Professor of Japanese Literature and Culture and Director of the Donald Keene Center of Japanese Culture, has been elected Honorary Member of the Japan Academy (Nippon gakushi-in). This is the highest recognition given in Japan to scholars in all fields. Professor Shirane is the only one to receive this honor in Japanese studies since Donald Keene. Shirane was also the first winner of the NIHU (National Institutes for the Humanities) International Prize in Japanese Studies (Dec. 2019), for outstanding achievement in the fields of Japanese humanities and environment
