Located in Cambodia, the Center for Khmer Studies (CKS) promotes research, teaching and public service in the social sciences, arts and humanities in Cambodia and the Mekong region. CKS fosters research and international scholarly exchange by programs that increase understanding of Cambodia and its region, strengthen Cambodia’s cultural and educational structures and integrate Cambodian scholars in regional and international exchange, and promote a vigorous civil society. These programs include the Senior Fellowships, Scholar in Residence Fellowships, Dissertation Research Fellowships, Junior Residence Fellowships, and the Khmer Language and Culture Program.

In addition, following decades of civil war and the targeted destruction of its educational resources, Cambodia faced a crisis in the preservation of its literary heritage. In this context, where access to books was almost non-existent and public libraries were only available to the average Cambodian in Phnom Penh, CKS began to build a library collection specializing in Cambodian and Southeast Asian history and culture. Since opening in 2001, the CKS Library collection has grown from a few hundred to over 19,000 titles, many are now available online.

Refreshments will be provided.

This event is sponsored by the Weatherhead East Asian Institute and co-sponsored by the New York Southeast Asia Network and the Center for Khmer Studies.
