Being a Diplomat, or Just Diplomatic: Southeast Asia-related Policy Work and Writing

05/02/2022 @ 9:00 am - 10:30 am

With speakers:
Ambassador Pham Quang Vinh, Senior Advisor, The Asia Group
Frank Jannuzi, President and CEO, The Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation
Sidney Jones, Senior Advisor, Institute of Policy Analysis of Conflict
Prashanth Parameswaran, Fellow, The Wilson Center Deputy Head of Research BowerGroupAsia

Moderated by:
Meredith Weiss, Department of Political Science, University at Albany, SUNY

This panel brings together experts who have built successful careers working in public policy, on and in Southeast Asia. Panelists will address such questions as what to consider when deciding between representing one’s country at the national and regional levels; how best to engage the US government as a subject-matter expert; how to build the trust and reputation necessary to sustain that expertise, especially as an “outsider”; and how to write for policy, rather than academic or media, audiences. In the process, panelists will touch on such issues, too, as the sorts of graduate/post-graduate education and training especially helpful for policy careers, what US government-oriented careers are open to non-US citizens, key institutions (e.g., think tanks) and publications to follow, and building a professional network in the Southeast Asia policy world, in the US or in the region. The panel will be useful for attendees from across academic and career levels, from undergraduate and graduate students, to faculty, to activists and current policy practitioners.
