CTLgrads Journal Club (for Graduate Students)

11/17/2021 @ 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm

Are you interested in the research on teaching and learning and how to apply this research to your teaching practice? Join us for our CTLgrads Journal Club where we will introduce you to the research on teaching in various disciplines (also known as Discipline-Based Education Research, or DBER) and engage peer-reviewed articles through our group discussions and contributions to the journal club. Each session will also focus on how we can use education research–in our field and beyond–to inform our own teaching practices.

The CTLgrads Journal Club will be a HyFlex event, you may choose to attend either in person or online via Zoom. Journal Club will start on Wednesday 10/6 from 2:40-3:55p and will meet every other Wednesday until the beginning of December (10/20, 11/3, 11/17, 12/1).

Prior to this session, please read:

  1. Deslauriers, L., et al. (2019). Measuring actual learning versus feeling of learning in response to being actively engaged in the classroom. PNAS, 116(39), p. 19251-19257
  2. Rau, M. A., et al. (2017). Unpacking “active learning”: A combination of flipped classroom and collaboration support is more effective but collaboration support alone is not. ACS, (94)10, p. 1406–1414.
  3. Please add quotes you’d like to discuss and/or discussion questions to our collaborative document prior to our meeting.

First time attending the CTLgrads Journal Club? We highly recommend you read this short, 2-page essay by Lee Shulman “Teaching as Community Property” (1993) for insight into the goals of the series.
