The Song of the Bee བཀའི་གུང་བློན་གྱི་འཁུར་འཛིན་པའི་རྟོགས་བརྗོད་བུང་བའི་མགྲིན་གླུ། is a recently discovered handwritten manuscript telling the life story of Surkhang Sichö Tseten ཟུར་ཁང་སྲི་གཅོད་ཚེ་བརྟན།, a Tibetan cabinet minister during the early 19th century and ancestor of the 20th century Surkhang Wangchen Gelek ཟུར་ཁང་དབང་ཆེན་དགེ་ལེགས།. Not only is this text a rare window into early modern Tibetan history but it marks only the fourth known example of lay life writing during the Ganden Podrang period.
This valuable new literary source was recently published by Tibet People’s Publishing House in Lhasa. Please Join us for a discussion with co-editor Riga Shakya (Columbia University) to celebrate this important publication.
Riga Shakya is a Ph.D candidate in late Imperial Chinese and Tibetan history at the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures (EALAC) at Columbia University. He is broadly interested in Tibetan cultural and intellectual history, and the history of Sino-Tibetan relations during the Qing dynasty.
