Looking Closely at Color in 19th-Century Nishiki-e

“Looking Closely at Color in 19^th-Century Nishiki-e” is a one-and-a-half day workshop to be held on October 20-21, 2017 (all day Friday and Saturday morning) at Columbia University. Co-sponsored by the Mary Griggs Burke Center for Japanese Art and the Donald Keene Center of Japanese Culture, the workshop will bring together academic historians of art and culture, museum curators, conservators, and conservation scientists to new research and explore future initiatives in the history of the technical and material underpinnings of 19^th-century nishiki-e, focusing in particular on the uses of color in late Edo and Meiji prints.

The workshop is open to all interested, but registration is required since seating is limited. To register, please send an email indicating your own area of study to Henry Smith (hds2@columbia.edu). Those registered are encouraged to prepare by looking at the starred “most essential items” on a list of “Recommended Readings.” A link to the DropBox folder with all the recommended readings will be provided after you register.
