Modern Japan Seminar

10/05/2023 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

We look forward to seeing you on 5 October (Thursday) at the Weatherhead East Asia Institute, International Affairs Building room #1302, from 6:30-8:30pm, for the Modern East Asia: Japan seminar. Please note that the room has changed to #1302, not #918 as is written in the previous announcement.

Professor H. Yumi Kim (Johns Hopkins University) will present “Acting Like Female Spirit Mediums: Performance, Bodiles, and Spiritual Power in Early-Twentieth Century Okinawa.”

Professor Kirsten Ziomek (Adelphi University) will comment.

After registration, attendees will receive a copy of Prof. Kim’s paper.

After each session this term there is an optional dinner. The cost of dinner is $15 per person ($10 for graduate students), payable in cash to the seminar organizers on the day of the event. Please reserve the dinner with the seminar rapporteur Zhanying Wang, if you haven’t already done so in the RSVP Google Form.

Directions to IAB can be found here. The building is wheelchair accessible from both West 118th st. and Amsterdam Ave. Due to ID card lock security, non-affiliates are welcome to meet seminar rapporteur Zhanying at the West 118th St. entrance between 6:20 and 6:30pm for access to the building.

All questions can be directed to Zhanying (zw2855@columbia.edu).
