Navigating HOT Moments: Before, During, & After Class (for Faculty)
10/06/2022 @ 10:45 am - 12:00 pm
A 75-minute workshop for Columbia Faculty.
Regardless of course topic or content, HOT — heated, offensive, or tense — moments in the classroom are always a possibility. Although never fully avoidable or predictable, there are steps instructors can take to help mitigate the potential for these moments, and strategies to help better equip instructors for navigating HOT moments when they occur. Building upon material from the Anti-Racist Pedagogy in Action: First Steps resource and live workshop, this session will help instructors identify strategies for engaging with, facilitating, and navigating HOT moments before, during, and after class.
Please note: This session will draw from reflections and activities completed during our live Anti-Racist Pedagogy in Action: First Steps session. We strongly encourage that you complete that session in community with others. If, however, you are unable to attend a live offering, we do offer an asynchronous worksheet that can be completed ahead of this session.
After attending this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Identify strategies for anticipating and preparing for HOT moments before they occur
- Identify ways to respond to and follow up on HOT classroom moments during and after class
- Access strategies to become better equipped to navigate HOT classroom moments
Unable to join us for this workshop? Engage with the CTL on-demand resource: Navigating Heated, Offensive, and Tense (HOT) Moments in the Classroom. You can also schedule a consultation, or find other workshops on our CTL events calendar.
