Join the Library as we welcome Allison Markin Powell, Marie Iida, and Juliet Grames in the panel “Japanese Crime Fiction: How It Caught The World” to discuss Japanese Crime Fiction in the United States and its growing popularity. The discussion will be led by the English translators of Kaoru Takamura’s Lady Joker, Allison Markin Powell and Marie Iida, as well as editor Juliet Grames from the acclaimed Soho Crime imprint and the literature in translation program.

Our panelists will discuss the genre as a whole, why it has taken off in recent years, and what it’s like translating such a well-revered work.

Allison Markin Powell is a literary translator, editor, and publishing consultant. She received the 2020 PEN America Translation Prize for The Ten Loves of Nishino by Hiromi Kawakami. She was the co-organizer and co-host of the Translating the Future conference, and is a founding member of the translator collectives Cedilla & Co. and Strong Women, Soft Power.

Marie Iida is a Japanese-English interpreter and writer. In addition to working for various international organizations including the Cannes Film Festival, New York Asian Film Festival, Japan Society, and MoMA, she has served as an on-camera interpreter for the Emmy-nominated Netflix series, Tidying Up with Marie Kondo. A member of the Writers Guild of America West, she is currently based in Los Angeles.

Juliet Grames is SVP, Associate Publisher at Soho Press, where she curates the critically acclaimed Soho Crime imprint and the literature in translation program. She is the 2022 recipient of the Mystery Writers of America Ellery Queen Award for her editorial contributions to the genre.
