TANADA Yuki, one of Japan’s most prominent contemporary women filmmakers, will visit Columbia for a screening of One Million Yen Girl (2008), her early masterpiece about a young female protagonist Suzuko (Aoi Yu) seeking independence by saving up money and drifting around Japan. With masterful storytelling that foregrounds women’s lives and their struggles, Tanada’s comical travelogue brought her several prestigious awards including the 2008 Directors Guild of Japan New Director Award. The screening will be followed by a Q and A with the director.
