04/19/2023 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

April 19, 2023
1:10 PM – 2:25 PM
Uris Hall at Columbia University, 3022 Broadway, Room 330, New York, NY 10027

Speaker: Hayeon Lee, Postdoctoral Research Scholar in Modern Vietnamese Studies, WEAI, Columbia University

Moderator: Seong Uk Kim, Assistant Professor of Korean Religions and Culture, Department of East Asian Languages & Cultures, Columbia University

Hayeon Lee will discuss her research about the lives and narratives of Vietnamese marriage migrant women to South Korea, based on three years of ethnographic field work. She will discuss how these women make meaning and build their lives amid their transnational, cyclical movements between Vietnam and Korea, as they navigate interlocking power structures based on gender, class, and nation. Dr. Lee will also discuss how these women’s migrant trajectories both necessarily and unwittingly generate changes in the two countries, as well as how these trajectories are relevant to Vietnam-Korea relations in the contemporary era.

This event is sponsored by the Weatherhead East Asian Institute and cosponsored by the New York Southeast Asia Network.
