Please join us for an interdisciplinary conversation about China’s response to the coronavirus. With Huang Yanzhuong, Yan Wan and Nick Bartlett, moderated by Weiping Wu. This panel will feature brief presentations and a conversation about the emergence and recent response to the current outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19), with a particular focus on recent efforts aiming to treat and prevent additional infections. Drawing on perspectives from epidemiology, public health and governance, urban planning, and medical anthropology, the panelists will discuss recent developments and reflect on the potential consequences for social life in China and beyond. The event will include extended time for discussion with the audience.

About the Speakers:

Yanzhong Huang is a senior fellow for global health at the Council on Foreign Relations, where he directs the Global Health Governance roundtable series. He is also professor and director of global health studies at Seton Hall University’s School of Diplomacy and International Relations, where he developed the first academic concentration among U.S. professional schools of international affairs that explicitly addresses the security and foreign policy aspects of health issues. He is the founding editor of Global Health GovernanceThe Scholarly Journal for the New Health Security Paradigm and the author of Governing Health in Contemporary China (Routledge 2013) and Toxic Politics: China’s environmental health crisis and the challenge to the state (Cambridge, forthcoming).

Wan Yang is an assistant professor of Epidemiology at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health trained as an environmental engineer and infectious disease modeler interested in understanding how infectious diseases spread through the population, as well as methods to model and predict these epidemics. She is also developing forecast systems to predict outbreaks of infectious diseases. In addition, she studies how environmental factors influence the transmission of influenza, its seasonality, and the underlying mechanisms.

Nick Bartlett is an assistant professor at Barnard College, Columbia University’s department of Asian and Middle Eastern Cultures. He worked in public health in China before training as a medical anthropologist. In addition to current research exploring the adoption of psychodynamic traditions in mental health interventions in China, he is author of the forthcoming Recovering Histories: Life and labor after heroin in Reform-era China.

Weiping Wu is Professor of Urban Planning at Columbia GSAPP and Director of the M.S. Urban Planning program. Trained in architecture and urban planning, Prof. Wu has focused her research and teaching on understanding urban dynamics in developing countries in general and China in particular. She is an internationally acclaimed urban and planning scholar working on global urbanization with a specific expertise in issues of migration, housing, and infrastructure of Chinese cities.
