Carsten T. Vala is Associate Professor of Political Science at Loyola University Maryland. His latest book, The Politics of Protestant Churches and the Party-State in China, God Above Party? , released on August 29, studies the structural challenges posed by Protestants to the Chinese Communist Party’s ordering of society, the governments’ effort to restrain Protestant population growth, and the founding of large, unregistered churches despite official pressures.
