The roundtable will feature ten exchange fellows from Ladakh and Dharamsala, India, and two fellows from northern Nepal. All will be in NYC for a Dept of State-sponsored exchange visit coordinated by Columbia’s Modern Tibetan Studies Program. We would like to take the opportunity of the fellows being here so that they can exchange with our campus students, faculty and staff, as well as our local program subscribers. The event will also be offered via Zoom webinar as the exchange will be of interest to scholars of the Tibetan economy and diaspora, and we are hoping: to Tibetan entrepreneurs more widely.
The event will open with each of the fellows presenting their business for just 5 minutes each with 3-5 photos per project. They will be grouped by business-focus: wool and fiber production; organic farming; green architecture; and tourism. A widely experienced New York-based Tibetan business woman will facilitate the rountable discussion: Ms. Yanki Tshering, Founder and Executive Director of Accompany Capital (formerly Business Center for New Americans). The panel will explore issues related to the challenges and opportunities of Tibetan entrepreneurs in South Asia, in particular. The discussion will lead to issues of citizenship, land and business ownership, taxes, online networks, distribution, cultural preservation, the flight of youth from remote areas, and other current trends.
This event is part of the event series on “Cultural Production in the Tibetan Diaspora“ and is hosted by the Weatherhead East Asian Institute and cosponsored by Modern Tibetan Studies Program.
