Please join us in congratulating Professor David Lurie for winning the the 2022 Mark Van Doren Award for Teaching. We are delighted to announce that Professor Haruo Shirane, Shincho Professor of Japanese Literature and Culture and Director of the Donald Keene Center of Japanese Culture, has been elected Honorary Member of the Japan Academy (Nippon gakushi-in). This is the highest recognition given in Japan to scholars in all fields. Professor Shirane is the only one to receive this honor in Japanese studies since Donald Keene. Shirane was also the first winner of the NIHU (National Institutes for the Humanities) International Prize in Japanese Studies (Dec. 2019), for outstanding achievement in the fields of Japanese humanities and environment
