CTLgrads Journal Club (for Graduate Students)

Are you interested in the research on teaching and learning and how to apply this research to your teaching practice? Join us for our CTLgrads Journal Club where we will introduce you to the research on teaching in various disciplines (also known as Discipline-Based Education Research, or DBER) and engage peer-reviewed articles through our group discussions and contributions to the journal club. Each session will also focus on how we can use education research–in our field and beyond–to inform our own teaching practices.

– Readings will be distributed one week prior to the session.
– Participants are expected to have read the papers in order to contribute to and learn from the journal club’s discussions.

The CTLgrads Journal Club will meet online via Zoom starting on Thursday 1/28 from 2:40-3:55p. We will meet every other Thursday until the end of April (1/28, 2/11, 2/25, 3/11, 3/25, 4/8, 4/22).

Sessions are co-facilitated by Chris Chen and Ian Althouse, Center for Teaching and Learning, and attendance is open to current graduate students and postdocs.

NOTES:
– The CTLgrads Bookclub will be held ONLINE. Registered participants will be sent a meeting ID and passcode to join this session via Zoom. Same-day registrations must be handled by emailing CTLgrads@columbia.edu.

Inclusive Teaching Seminar 6 – Cultivating Critical Self-Reflection

For Graduate Students: This is Session 6 of our six-part series exploring the principles and frameworks that define an inclusive teaching practice through guided debrief discussions based on the CTL’s Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) “Inclusive Teaching: Supporting All Students in the College Classroom.” Attendance at prior or later sessions of CTL’s Inclusive Teaching discussion series is not required to attend this session, but is highly recommended. Graduate students who can attend at least five sessions are encouraged to apply to participate in this program on the seminar level. Learn more here.

Prior to this session, participants are expected to have completed the Module 5 of Columbia University CTL’s MOOC (approximately 45 minutes). If you have not had a chance to complete the Overview of Inclusive Teaching Module, we highly recommend reviewing its content as well.

During this session we will reflect on the considerations for establishing a critically reflective practice and routine for self-reflection offered in the online module and debrief our own experiences or plans for enacting such ideas in the classroom.

By the end of the session, participants should be able to:
– Identify ways to engage in self-reflection about inclusive teaching practices
– Develop a plan to solicit multiple forms of feedback about your inclusive teaching practices

Microteaching Practice Online (for Graduate Students)

Want to practice a new in-class activity or just get some more practice before teaching in your virtual classroom? Join peers in an online Microteaching Practice session where you will divide into groups of 3-4 with a facilitator and take turns delivering short samples of instruction to each other. After each teaching sample, your facilitator and your peers will offer structured feedback to support your teaching. Whether you are currently teaching at Columbia or not, all graduate students looking to practice teaching are welcome to attend this Microteaching Practice session.
