Teachers’ Lounge | Lessons from a Pandemic: Testing and Trust

How has the experience of running classes online clarified what is important about traditional ways of measuring our students’ knowledge and capacities? What adjustments have we needed to make when designing and giving tests for students in order to navigate the emotional and logistical challenges of this difficult and unsettled time? Join us for a frank discussion of topics such as proctoring, maintaining or relaxing standards, accommodations, and trust.

Teachers’ Lounges are a series of informal discussions for graduate students about teaching practices and the culture of learning at Columbia. Since many classes have shifted online this semester, Teachers’ Lounges are linking theories and models of online instruction to insights derived from working in digital learning spaces with Columbia students.

This session is facilitated by Mark Phillipson and Chris Chen from the Center for Teaching and Learning.

Feedback for Learning (For Faculty)

Are you frustrated that the feedback you give to students seems to go unnoticed/unused? Tired of pouring over students’ work and spending hours grading? Do you wonder how to make the feedback you give more effective?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, this workshop is for you! Together we will reflect on our current feedback practices. Participants will explore the connection between feedback and student learning, and learn about giving feedback that is actionable, timely, and efficient. Through activities and discussion, you will craft an individual plan that incorporates evidence-based feedback strategies that are transparent, time-saving, and effective into your teaching practice.

In advance of this session, registered participants will complete a short reading that will inform the session activities. Link to the reading will be provided via email along with a Zoom link.

After attending this session, participants should be able to:

Reflect on current feedback practices
Develop a plan to deliver feedback that advances student learning in their specific courses and disciplinary context

Inclusive Teaching Seminar 1 – Defining Inclusive Teaching

For Graduate Students: This is Session 1 of CTL’s six-part series exploring the principles and frameworks that define an inclusive teaching practice through guided debrief discussions based on the CTL’s Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) “Inclusive Teaching: Supporting All Students in the College Classroom.” Attendance at later sessions of CTL’s Inclusive Teaching discussion series is not required to attend this session, but is highly recommended. Graduate students who can attend at least five sessions are encouraged to apply to participate in this program on the seminar level. Learn more here.

Prior to this session, participants are expected to have completed the Overview of Inclusive Teaching Module of Columbia University CTL’s MOOC (approximately 45 minutes). During this session we will dig deeper into the definitions of inclusive teaching offered in the online module and debrief our experiences reflecting on our own identities and identifying assumptions that we may bring to the classroom.

By the end of the session, participants should be able to:
– Identify and reflect on teacher and learner identities and their relationship to inclusive teaching
– Describe key terms in inclusive teaching scholarship
