Essentials of Teaching and Learning: Inclusive Teaching

Learn about the key terms, frameworks, and principles of inclusive teaching. Join the CTL for a workshop for graduate students focused on strategies and tools for including all of your students in the learning process. We will ask how instructors can create inclusive classroom environments that set up all students for success, as well as how instructors can help students learn through the diversity of experiences and perspectives they bring to the classroom.

Prior to this session, participants are expected to have completed a 20-minute module on Canvas. Register here. To get started on the module, self-enroll in the Essentials Canvas site here: https://courseworks2.columbia.edu/enroll/CBT7BT.

***Registration will close the night before the live session.***

By the end of the session, participants should be able to:

– Identify and reflect on teacher and learner identities and their relationship to inclusive teaching
– Describe key terms in inclusive teaching scholarship
– Develop strategies for creating an inclusive course climate
– Apply inclusive teaching principles to their own teaching practice

The Essentials of Teaching and Learning workshop series for graduate students is focused on giving you tools as a new or developing instructor to better facilitate student learning and improve your teaching practice. These workshops are best experienced sequentially.

This is the first of 4 sessions being held at the same time on the following dates:
– Inclusive Teaching: Creating an Inclusive Course Climate, 1/19
– Backward Design and Learning Objectives, 1/26
– Active Learning, 2/2
– Assessment and Feedback for Learning, 2/9

For more information and registration links for these additional sessions, see: https://ctl.columbia.edu/graduate-instructors/programs-for-graduate-students/workshops-for-graduate-students/essentials/.

Attending this workshop and posting reflections satisfies a Foundational Track requirement for participants in the Teaching Development Program (TDP). See bit.ly/ctl-tdp for details.

*Please note that this is not a Zoom training session. Teaching Online with CourseWorks

Online teaching presents its own opportunities and challenges. Join us in exploring how to create community, support student engagement, and assess student learning in the online context using CourseWorks, Columbia’s learning management system. This workshop will give you an overview of the CourseWorks interface and highlight a toolset that will allow you to set up a course with clear expectations for students, create opportunities for a variety of assignment engagements, and nurture an environment that encourages a culture of inclusive communication. Please note that this session takes place via Zoom and is not a Zoom training session. Before you attend this session, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with Zoom. You can access CUIT’s zoom training sessions on their Zoom training page. By the end of the session, participants should be able to: Determine which CourseWorks tools will meet the teaching and learning goals of their course(s). Intentionally integrate CourseWorks into their courses.

Graduate Student Teaching Orientation Debrief Session

Are you a graduate student teaching for the first time, or looking for guidance on how to prepare for your first week of classes? If you haven’t done so already, enroll in the Teaching Orientation for Graduate Students, organized by the Center for Teaching and Learning at this link to access resources on the following topics:

Establishing instructional goals and an inclusive learning climate
Overview of TA roles and online teaching support
Creating a policy sheet and first day of class plan
Common TA challenges and campus resources to help navigate them
Next steps for teaching and professional development
Once you’ve completed these modules, we invite you to join the CTL for this 90-minute, synchronous (live) online session on January 8th to debrief big ideas from the Orientation modules, think about the application of these ideas to your specific teaching practice, get feedback about materials you’ve prepared for the first day of classes, and ask burning questions you have about teaching this semester. Completion of the online modules is strongly encouraged prior to joining this session in order to ensure meaningful participation in planned activities. This session will be facilitated by Caitlin DeClercq, Assistant Director of Graduate Student Programs and Services at the CTL.

Registrants will be sent a Zoom link prior to the start of the session. For more information, visit the CTL website.
