Teaching Online with CourseWorks

Online teaching presents its own opportunities and challenges. Join us in exploring how to create community, support student engagement, and assess student learning in the online context using CourseWorks, Columbia’s learning management system. This workshop will give you an overview of the CourseWorks interface and highlight a toolset that will allow you to set up a course with clear expectations for students, create opportunities for a variety of assignment engagements, and nurture an environment that encourages a culture of inclusive communication.

Please note that this session takes place via Zoom and is not a Zoom training session. Before you attend this session, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with Zoom. You can access CUIT’s Zoom training sessions on their Zoom training page.

By the end of the session, participants should be able to:

Determine which CourseWorks tools will meet the teaching and learning goals of their course(s).
Intentionally integrate CourseWorks into their courses.

Assessment and Grading Online with Columbia Tools

Assessing and grading students in online or hybrid courses can present challenges to instructors. Columbia provides several tools to help you create effective assessments and grade more efficiently. Join the CTL in exploring assignments, quizzes, and the gradebook in CourseWorks as well a newly available tool, Gradescope. This workshop will give you an overview of the tools available to you to assess your students, create online exams, and grade large classes efficiently, as well as strategies you can use to meet the demands of online assessment.

Planning Live Online Class Sessions (For Faculty)

How do I avoid Zoom fatigue? Will lecturing help my students learn? What can I do to plan effective live online class sessions?

In this session, we will address these questions by drawing on findings from the science of learning and consider ways of breaking up a live (synchronous) online class session to promote student engagement and learning. Participants will have the opportunity to plan for an upcoming class session and share strategies they use to engage their learners during lectures.
