Convening a group of distinguished scholars of Chinese and Vietnamese history, this conference interrogates the role of modern nationalist ideation on scholarly reconstructions of the past. The specters of Chinese and Vietnamese national identity have exerted themselves with extraordinary strength on research into the past, shaping both the questions we ask and the boundaries we draw, often according to implicit assumptions about what constitutes “China” or “Vietnam.” A series of panels will explore diverse facets of nationalist ideation in the Lingnan region, beginning with 19th and 20th century conceptions before reflecting on how these modern notions inform, constrain, or confuse scholarly understanding of the medieval period, broadly defined here as the 1st Millennium CE.
